These early plastic pens were promoted as being lighter than the earlier hard rubber pens.
This pen still sports the wide “golden girdle” that the hard rubber pens had. The rubber pens, particularly the red ones, were more brittle and the cap lips were vulnerable to splitting. Therefore, the application of a band to reinforce the area.
